Journeys co-founders Joan and Will Weber spent a week in Costa Rica on a birding trip. Here, Joan talks about her perspective as a non-birder.

Older group looks at birds in Costa Rica

We are in Costa Rica, alert, engaged, and paying exquisite attention on the Journeys adventure we could have called “Birding (and so much more) in Paradise.” We are a group of 13 plus Alex our guide and Francisco our driver. Most of the group members, but not all, identify as birders. Some, but not all, are listers looking for new birds for life lists. Most of us enjoy photography; a few have maximally powerful state-of-the-art telephoto lenses with extenders, but we also use point-and-shoots and smart phones and everything in-between.

The mix is working. We help each other see and we help each other shoot. We all signed on for a trip that would have birding as its focus in a country that is teeming with birdlife. And we signed on to be part of a group with a range of skills and interests. We’re curious. We enjoy nature. We’ve heard about the diversity and riches of Costa Rica, and we are taking it all in.

To explore as a birder is to stay wide awake. It’s learning enough about where you are so you might cultivate some expectations, and then remaining ever open to possibilities. It’s the delight of heightened expectancy, and the thrill of surprise.

At the end of every day, our group reviews the bird checklist and recalls the day’s sightings. Some group members count and tally; others don’t. From birds, we go on to other sightings as well. It’s a ritual that not only reinforces our recall, but also highlights our connectedness.
