Salalah, the capital of Oman’s Dhofar region, is a subtropical city that is famous for its monsoon season called “khareef” which runs from June to September. During this season, the city transforms into an oasis and is often referred to as the “Perfume Capital of Arabia.” However, Salalah has many other natural wonders to offer year-round. These include the stunning waterfalls, lakes, mountains, and caves of Wadi Darbat, Mughsail Bay, and some of the most beautiful beaches in Oman. You can explore these sights at your own pace, and your experience can be customized to suit your interests or goals.
Day 1: Arrival in Salalah
Upon arrival at Salalah International Airport, you will be greeted by our representative. After completing the immigration formalities, you will be transferred to your hotel in Salalah. Check in at the hotel and enjoy your leisure time for the rest of the day. You will be staying overnight at Hilton Salalah Resort or a similar hotel.
Day 2: East and West Salalah Tour
Wake up early in the morning and have breakfast, as we will start the full-day tour of the most popular destinations in Salalah. At 9 o’clock sharp, we will depart for our tour by driving towards the east. After approximately 35km, we will reach the coastal village of Taqah, which is mainly known for its beautiful beach and the Taqah Castle. The castle is surrounded by watchtowers, and there are numerous stone houses, which are fascinating for those interested in traditional Omani architecture.
We will then head towards Khor Rori, a freshwater creek surrounded by greenery that attracts many aquatic birds. Next to the creek lies the ruined city of Samhuram, the capital of ancient Arabia’s frankincense trade, which is part of the Incense Route in Oman and has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After exploring the ruins, we will continue along the road to Mirbat, the ancient capital of Dhofar, which became famous in the ninth century as the regional hub for trade in frankincense, horses, and slaves. Nowadays, it’s a quiet town with old Dhofari-style houses in the older parts of town, a harbor where fishermen bring in their catch, and a beautiful beach.
One of Dhofar’s best-known historic sites is Bin Ali’s Tomb, a structure with twin onion-styled dome and whitewashed surface that lies outside the main town even before the horse columns. Early afternoon, we will drive towards the western side of Salalah. High in the mountains lies the tomb of the Prophet Job or Nabi Ayub, which is truly a beautiful sight to behold and is one of the favorite places to visit in Salalah during Khareef.
We will then drive down to Al Mughsail Beach, the most popular beach in Salalah, with its white sand and blue waters. Walking towards the west end of the beach through the Al Marneef Caves leads to the famous blowholes, which are perforations in the limestone rock. Later, we will return to Salalah, and on the road, you can see the stark shape of leafless Frankincense Trees.
You will be staying overnight at the Hilton Salalah Resort or a similar hotel.
Day 3: The Lost City Tour
We will proceed on a full-day tour to Ubar, the ruins of the fabled city of Ubar chronicled in classical works as the “Atlantis of the sands”. It is among a series of exciting archaeologists’ excavations currently underway along the route. In the Rub-Al Khali (The empty quarter) area, we will experience dune driving before returning to the hotel. You will be provided with a picnic lunch in the desert.
You will be staying overnight at the Hilton Salalah Resort or a similar hotel.
Day 4: Departure from Salalah
On the last day of your trip, you will be transferred to Salalah airport to board your flight for your onward destination.
