Algiers, the capital and largest city in Algeria, was established during the Ottoman era in the 10th century by Bologhine ibn Ziri, founder of the Berber Zirid-Sanhaja dynasty. It is built on the slopes of the Sahel Hills along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The city may be best known for the Kasbah, a maze-like old town classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The neighborhood is characterized by whitewashed, high-walled houses and narrow streets. Other favorite landmarks of the city include Martyrs Square, several beautiful mosques, the impressive Roman Catholic Cathedral – Notre Dame d’Afrique.
